TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT LOVE

February is the month of love, but you don't need chocolates, cards, and other material goods to show people how much you love them, especially your children.
Each year it seems that holiday displays show up earlier and earlier. Christmas displays start appearing in the summer or (winter in the southern hemisphere), and Valentine's cards appear on the shelves before Christmas.
It's tempting to buy a few gifts to express your love and go about daily life, but why limit this to February 14th? Here are some ways to show your child that you love them every day!

• Fix a family snack together. Measuring ingredients and following cooking directions is not only fun, but it is also a teachable science moment that concludes with a delicious treat.
• Play at the park or in the backyard together. You don't have to be a sports enthusiast to enjoy the great outdoors. Some playgrounds have adaptive equipment for residents with special needs, and if you're on a budget, then activities like blowing bubbles or finding shapes in the clouds can be enjoyed by family members of all ages.
• Spend time coloring together. Do you recall how relaxing it was as a child to let your worries drift away as you focused on filling in the pages of a coloring book? I know from the experience of coloring with my children that this is just as relaxing for adults, too!
